Coooking with wheat flour

Last week, I was going to go shopping, and was looking forward to getting a pretzel at Auntie Anne's in the mall. I ended up not going shopping, and came home and made my own pretzels. (Recipe HERE.)

Well, I've been trying to eat better, and so to justify eating pretzels, I thought I'd add some wheat flour to the recipe, to make it a tad bit healthier. I substituted one cup of whole wheat flour for white flour, and the pretzels were still wonderful.

I do this often to most recipes. Even in my baked goods. Even my chocolate chip cookies and brownies. Really, you can't even tell in some recipes.

I usually start off small the first time I add wheat flour to a recipe, just to see how much it changes the taste. Then, the next time I make a recipe I can adjust accordingly.

I personally prefer white whole wheat flour. It isn't quite as dense, but still the same health benefits. The only downside is it's more expensive, so if it ever goes on sale I buy a lot. But, it rarely does.

Anyway, if you haven't already, don't be afraid to try it! The only thing I haven't liked it in was crepes! It turned crepes into pancakes.

Do you have good recipes using your whole wheat flour? Feel free to share them with me!!

  1. I get white wheat at Sharp Shopper and grind it myself. Very cheap. But I think that they sell in flour form too, probably for a lot cheaper than the regular store. I'll check for you. Or you can use my grinder when you visit.
I use it in biscuits, muffins, bread, waffles, and pancakes. But not desserts. If a dessert tastes too healthy, then I just end up looking for a "real" dessert afterward!

  2. Really? I'll totally want to do that when I come in next then!! Thank!!! I don't like wheat in my waffles. I don't mind it in other stuff, but not my waffles, for some reason. I think the dessert thing might be a mental thing for you. :) LOL!

  3. That's funny, because I mind it the least in waffles. They still turn out with a good texture. Maybe you need my recipe (Betty C). In fact, Jeryl will make it 100% ww, and it's fine! Usually I just do it 50%. By the time you put fruit, w cream, syrup, etc. you can't hardly taste it.

The dessert thing is definitely part mental, but part taste too. But isn't weight control a mental thing, anyway? It's all related. If ever I hear someone use the line, "It's all in your head" my thought or response is "So? Isn't my head the most important part of me!?"
